Did you know that you can use your IRA and 401k accounts to invest in real estate TAX FREE???
Hopefully you're aware that your retirement accounts CAN invest in a wide array of investments, and most exciting, real estate! This is the power of self-direction.
The most common self directed retirement accounts used to invest are IRA's, however, there are also, 401k's, Health savings accounts, and education savings accounts as well. Depending on which type of retirement account you have, you can achieve tax free or tax deferred returns.
A Fantastic new option became available on January 1, 1998 with the establishment of the Roth IRA. There are always individual circumstances to consider, however, the simplest way to think about a Roth IRA vs a Traditional IRA is being taxed on the seed versus the harvest. In a Roth IRA your contribution(s) are with after tax dollars (so you're taxed on the seed) but earnings and distributions are not taxed! In a Traditional IRA, your contributions are tax deductible, but distributions will be taxed (so you're taxed on the harvest). Which is best depends on your personal situation, however, being able to direct the account's investment decisions gives you power regardless.
Below is a link to the Entrust Group, who is one of the bigger players in the self directed retirement account industry. We are not endorsing them particularly; we just feel that they have good information and learning tools that can help you. Switching to a Self Directed account from your current account is pretty easy and simple. It's a great way to enhance returns and make your money work harder then you are. Plus, it puts you back in the driver's sear, which is exactly where you belong when it comes to your money!
